名古屋地域の急速な経済成長を見守ってきた都市景観、それが中川運河です。1960年代まで重要な役割を果たしていました。今日では、穏やかな水面沿いに並ぶ大型倉庫、自然に生まれた緑地、そして昔ながらの村の名残をとどめる住宅街や小さな家族経営の店が、独特の魅力を醸し出しています。
名古屋市と中川運河の「らしさ」を見つけるため、中川運河ギャラリーでは創造的な活動を含むアート制作やリサーチ、ワークショップを行っています。展覧会、町歩きツアー、講演や刊行物を通じて、知識を深め、共有し、学びを促すことを目指しています。
ここに住む人と遠方の方々、個人と地元企業、専門家とアマチュアを集め、みんなでふるさと・コミュニティを発展させます。

We promote the charms

Loving the charms of the Nakagawa Unga (Nakagawa Canal) means wanting to discover more about it!
The Nakagawa Canal is a cityscape that has witnessed the rapid economic growth of the Nagoya region, having played a key role as a central waterway until the 1960s. Today, its charm lies in the unique blend of large warehouses, patches of spontaneous greenery, and residential areas with small family-run businesses—some of which still preserve traces of old village settlements from the area's pre-industrialization era.

The Nakagawa Unga Gallery creates art, conducts research, and organizes workshops with fun and interactive activities to explore Nagoya City and its Nakagawa Canal. We aim to gain and share knowledge and inspire learning through exhibitions, city walks, lectures, and publications.
By involving those who live here and people from further afield, individuals and local businesses, professionals and hobbyists, we are developing a 'hometown community' together.

We are a small community along the old Nakagawa Unga in the heart of the manufacturing region of Nagoya. You can have a look or make something yourself. Stop by, get involved, contribute and help make things better!

令和7年5月8日は「なごやの日」です。
平成7年5月8日の「なごやの日」にも、名古屋ではさまざまなイベントが開催されたと聞 いています。今回の展示は、メンバーの一人が「なごやの日」に生まれたことをきっかけに 企画しました。 本展示では、公募で集めた「なごや」をテーマに交わされた手紙の記録や、なごやで撮 影された写真、なごやに纏わる作品をご覧いただけます。普段、誰かの手紙を読む機会は あまりないかもしれませんが、手紙や作品を通して、新たな「なごや」に触れていただけれ ば幸いです。

‘‘Nagoya Day’’
Nagoya (785) Day
May 8, 1995, was established as "Nagoya (758) Day." On this day, events related to the numbers "7-5-8" were organized by the Nagoya City Government and the Nagoya Tourism and Convention Bureau, inviting participation from citizens, organizations, and companies. As a result, a total of 93 events were held across the city. For example, at Mochinoki Plaza on Hisaya Street, a countdown leading up to 7:58 p.m. took place after a talent show on stage. With the gathered crowd of 3,000 shouting "Nagoyaa," fireworks were launched. It's a story that captures the excitement of the time!
The idea for this day comes from the Japanese pronunciation of the numbers 7 (nana), 5 (go), and 8 (hachi), which can be shortened to "na-go-ya" when said together, resembling the city's name, Nagoya. This wordplay is a culturally distinctive way in Japan to create memorable events and celebrations.

‘‘Nagoya Day’’
This exhibition was planned as a result of one of the members being born on ‘Nagoya Day’.
In this exhibition, you'll be able to browse through a collection of letters on the theme of ‘Nagoya’ that we gathered through a public call for entries, as well as photographs taken in Nagoya and other works related to the city. Although you may not often get the chance to read someone else's letters, we hope that through these letters and works you will be able to experience a new side to Nagoya.

❶「なごやを綴る」
1 月〜4月に、なごやをテーマに手紙のやりとりを行っていただきました。
今日はそれを公開・展示することでなごやに関わる人の生き方・考え方・暮らし方など 様々な方の視点に触れ、考えを知るきっかけになればと思います。

・会場に来られた方も手紙を書いて参加できるインスタレーション形式
・テーマの中から選んで1番目の手紙になってもよし、誰かにお返事を書いてもよし。
会期終了後にその相手に手紙を写真などを届ます。
